The 5K race draws its name from the Boston Marathon legend of the “Runner in Red,” a story that has been passed down through generations. The legend holds that the first woman to run a marathon in America snuck into the Boston Marathon in 1951. That year a group of Canadian runners insisted they saw a woman “wearing run” slip into the race in an era when rules precluded women from competing and fifteen years before history acknowledges the first woman runner. The Canadian runners’ contention was never proven, and thus the story became legend.
The story is chronicled – with a search for the mystery runner – in a novel, Runner in Red, by Tom Murphy, founder of Barb’s Beer and the Runner in Red race series. Tom is giving all profits from the novel to the cure lung cancer campaign. See details here.
NOTE: Barb’s Beer, a 501c3 charity, raises funds for the Runner in Red effort to help find a cure for lung cancer. See more about the beer and the campaign at barbsbeer.org.
See you all again next year!
The “Runner in Red” silhouette is a photo of Barb Murphy, wife of “Runner in Red” author, Tom Murphy, as she crossed the finish line at the 2000 Boston Marathon. Barb developed non-smoker lung cancer in 2007 and passed away in 2013. Our campaign raises funds to cure lung cancer in her memory.
