The 5K race draws its name from the Boston Marathon legend of the “Runner in Red,” a story that has been passed down through generations that the first woman to run a marathon in America snuck into the Boston Marathon in 1951. The legend grew out of a contention by a group of Canadian runners who insisted they spotted a woman “wearing run” in the race that day. This was during an era when women were not allowed to run and fifteen years before history acknowledges the first woman runner. The “woman in red” contention by the group of Canadian runners was never proven, and thus the story became legend.

The story is chronicled – with a search for the mystery runner – in a novel, Runner in Red, by Tom Murphy, founder of Barb’s Beer. Tom is giving all profits from the novel to the cure lung cancer campaign.

NOTE: Barb’s Beer, a 501c3 charity, raises funds for the Runner in Red effort to help find a cure for lung cancer. See more about the beer and the campaign at barbsbeer.org.

Barb Running Boston Marathon
The figure in our Barb’s Beer logo is not clip art, it’s a silhouette of Barb Murphy, Runner in Red author Tom Murphy’s late wife, crossing the finish line in the 2000 Boston Marathon. Barb passed away from lung cancer in 2013. Support a cure for lung cancer by contributing to the Runner in Red/Barb’s Beer charity campaign – DONATE.
